Tenuta Sant'Antonio

Passion, enthusiasm, business skills and experience. Four qualities for four brothers: Armando, Tiziano, Massimo and Paolo Castagnedi. A passion originated in the family vineyards when, as children, they lived in the countryside of San Zeno di Colognola ai Colli. This is an area of the extended Valpolicella region which produces well known red and white wines like Amarone, Valpolicella and Soave.

Their story began, as is natural, with papà Antonio. It was Antonio Castagnedi who owned some 20 hectares of vineyards and founded the local cooperative (Cantina Sociale) that could buy his and the other members’ grapes.

His four sons, on the other hand, wanted to change course. Thus, in 1989 they bought an additional 30 hectares in the Mezzane area. This was a high calcareous ridge between the valleys of the Ilasi and Mezzane rivers. The place is called Monti Garbi, a name that couldn’t be more appropriate, since garbo in the local dialect means ‘rugged, harsh’. The extremely chalky and poor vineyards are situated at an altitude between 120 and 320 meters. A place good for nothing, it seemed. It turned out to be great instead, for one thing only: the Corvinone grape, the backbone, that is, of Sant’Antonio’s Valpolicella and Amarone.

Now, 20 years later, the four Castagnedi’s own the whole of the Monte Garbi, 50 hectares of only reds, and 30 hectares of (mainly) whites near their childhood village Colognola. They have no need anymore of the Cantina Sociale either, because the grapes are handled in their own cellars in Mezzanedi Sotto, northeast of Verona. They invest a lot in their passion: the 2006 whites vintage was the first to be subjected to brand new technology. The immediate result: a white (70% Garganega grape) with much more flavour.

Working tightly together since the beginning of the 90’s, the four Castagnedi brothers have experienced the various stages and roles of their fathers activities. Their sense of business brought them to take a new and alternative path that proved to be successful. Thus they enlarged the foundations of a company that today does receive significant recognitions, not only in Italy but also abroad.
